Ballers out! PL Jays “Open X” golf outing hosts record turnout to kick-off the 2020 season

By Joseph Chapman

22 Squads formed the field for the 2020 PL Jays Hardball Invitational Golf Tournament. Champions Keating, Hanson, Lindstrom and Loehr posted a 53 in their win at Creeksbend GC on Saturday May 16, 2020.

A record turnout of 22 teams supported PL Amateur Baseball and Veterans Field on Saturday May 16 in the tenth annual fundraiser golf outing. Creeksbend Golf Club New Prague again hosted as familiar faces gathered to celebrate 2020 local hardball. Attendees included members and friends of the PL Jays, PL Mudcats, and PLABA as well reps from Jays 3B foes Burnsville and Victoria, a team of Northwest Umpire as well PL Laker Coaches from across the program. Thanks to ALL as well Creekbend Golf Club for our 1st PLABA event and “win” of 2020. CBGC Staff altered procedures to provide a fun and safe day for participants.

Familiar runner-up Jimmy Larson, Divinski, and the Even bros. came in 1-stroke out posting a 54 in ideal coolish conditions. Vet Jay tenured player Adam Cress, Miller, Weber, Schmoll, and Derrick Madson came in the show slot of 3rd 2 strokes off the lead in with a 55.

Repeat Champion Kirk Loehr may have been the difference-maker for the squad whose members have been on past Tourney champs. The save by “Lefty” was not his first, as he was a hurler in the early Jays mid-1980s squads along with Hanson and Lindstrom. On hole #2, the partners let down the charge leaving it to Loehr to blast a 5 iron to 10 feet of the cup to save the hole and the 2020 Championship. The Champs will join those enshrined on the Hoppe Bats trophy along with former Champions of the 10th annual event. A record 4-inch rain started as a drizzle shortly after completion of the event.

The 6 skin winners were teams Captained by Lehrer, TJ Larson, MKeating, BKelsey, Larson, and Roach who eagled 12, 5, 14, 11, 18, 17 to split the pot.
