Legion State Tournament: Routed by St. Michael; “Knockout Saturday” next

By Justin Braun

St. Michael Mike’s Post 567 defeated the Prior Lake Laker Legion 13-3 on Friday at Adams Alumni Field, thanks partly to a seven-run second inning putting the Post 567 up early 8-0.

St. Michael opened the scoring in the first after Evan Saunders hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.  The second inning proved costly for the Laker Legion as Post 567 scored seven runs on six hits in the top half. Grant Riedel homered to left, scoring two runs; an error scored two runs; Dillon Glass singled, scoring one run; and Saunders homered to center field, scoring another two runs.

It took five pitchers from the Laker Legion artillery to try to contain St. Michael.  Derek Gust started for PL, allowing one run on one hit and walking one.  Jaxson Barrett thew 1/3 of an inning, allowing five runs on three hits with one walk before being relieved by Matthew Johnson.  Johnson would throw 2/3 of an inning, allowing three runs on two hits.  Next up on the mount for Laker Legion was Owen Bredesen, who provided two innings of service, allowing no runs on one hit.  Noah Slates would round out the bullpen, providing three innings of relief.  In his appearance, he allowed five runs on four hits, with two walks and a strikeout, and tagged four batters.  Gust would receive the loss in this contest.

Dombeck threw a complete game for St. Michael, allowing three runs on six hits, issuing one walk, and punching out six Laker Legion batters.

Dominik Giancarlo went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Prior Lake in hits. Slates and Ryan Block each drove in one run for the Laker Legion.

With two wins and a loss, they are the pool runner-up and advance to the single-elimination knockout round on Saturday in Rochester.  They will face Eden Prairie Legion, who is 3-0 in the tournament, at Dale Massey Field.  This tilt is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM.
