The PL Mudcats have had a quick start to 2016 and had an early season showdown with the Shakopee Coyotes hoping to break the deadlock with identical 5-2 records on Memorial Day 2016.
The ‘Cats got 8 hard fought innings from starting pitcher Ben Morrison who gave up 6 runs, 2 earned and scattered 11 hits with a Mudcats defense that committed 8 errors behind him. Justin Hackett moved in from centerfield to close the door in the 9th striking out 2 for the save allowing no runners.
Down 6-5 after 8 innings, the ‘Cats rallied on a walk to 3B Brad Schoenrock, a pinch hit sac bunt by Greg Faue followed by a 2-2 count to Jerad Lehrer who then laced a single making it 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Johnny Houston lifted a ball just beyond the firstbaseman scoring Schoenrock for the tie and advancing Lehrer to 3rd while legging a double. DH Levi Schneider ripped a sacrifice fly to left to complete the Mudcats rally and the key win.
With the win the Mudcats cement the 3rd slot in the DRS standings with a key showdown Wed 6/1 730PM VS. the 6-2 St Patrick Irish at Veterans Field of Memorial Park in Prior Lake. A top 4 slot in the regular season grants a bye to Region Playoffs.
