Prior Lake Jays Open 2017 At LeSueur.
The 2017 PL Jays traveled to LeSueur Braves Bruce Frank Field Friday 5/19 to open 2017 with many new players in the lineup with 6 seeing action starting in the opening game at LeSueurs Bruce Frank field on a chilly evening of RVL baseball. One surprise for the visitors, former Jays outfielder Anthony White, now living in in the Mankato area, was the umpire for the RVL exhibition game.
The start of the game was promising for newcomers as shortstop Mike Edlefsen and third baseman Rob Frederick opened the game with singles but neither would score in the 1st inning. Player-Manager Scott Geisler, playing 1B, scored the Jays 1st run in the 2nd leading off with a high single that fell 10 feet from home without a play, advancing to 2nd on a wild pitch then to 3rd on catcher Brandt Brodericks groundout to 2nd base before trotting home on another wild pitch by Braves starter Jordan Sinnell. The Jays plated 2 additional runs when newcomer Garrett Quinell, playing RF, joined the “new guy” hit parade lacing a 0-2 count double to deep leftcenter to lead off the 6th inning, Following a walk to Edlefsen, Frederick lifted a ball to shallow right which Edlefsen got caught at 2nd for the 1st out as it was a tough read to advance on and the 1st out was recorded at 2nd base sending Quinell to third. Quinnell scored on a sacrifice fly to left by leftfielder Jason Peter. With 2 outs, DH Mitch McBeain drew a walk before Geisler delivered a RBI single scoring Frederick. Centerfielder Matt Cady was hit getting to 1B to load the bases but Broderick struck out swinging to end the threat with score 3-0 after the Jays 6th frame.
Jays starting pitcher Lawson Zenner was efficient with good command blanking the host Braves through 6 complete facing 2 over the minimum while hitting the leadoff batter of the game before scattering 4 hits (total for game 7IP, 10K, 2BB, 6H) before the Braves plated 3 in the bottom of 7, all unearned on a throwing error in the field from short, before Pat Galvin was called for relief to start the 8th. Jason Peter had the lone hit in the Jays 8th with Frederick, McBeain and Geisler striking out against Braves reliever Alex Kloog while Galvin faced 3 in the 8th striking out 2 Braves. Cady and Broderick struck out looking in the 9th while Jimmy Cosgrove grounded to first for a 1-2-3 Jays 9th. After a Braves single to left by Jacob Buetler, he advanced on consecutive wild pitches from Galvin that Broderick was unable to handle, Galvin struck out Jason Sundermann for the 1st out with Buetler on 3rd. Jordan Kahlow had a 1-2 count before Galvins wild pitch allowed Buetler to score ending the game for the home Braves. Galvin took the loss allowing 1 hit and 3 strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
For the day, newcomers Edlefsen, Frederick and Quinell tallied 3 of the Jays 6 hits while Cady (HBP) an McBeain (BB) reached base. Edlefsen playing shortstop, Frederick playing thirdbase and Cady playing centerfield all made good plays in the field with Cosgrove making a handful of plays including a long run and dive to end the Braves 4th inning in shallow right field.
The Jays 2017 home opener Sunday May 21 2:00PM hosting the Jordan Brewers was victim of cold rains and is unknown if it will be re-scheduled. Continue to check RVL website as well here for the latest information.
