A dream come true: Mudcats take the Field of Dreams in May

By Justin Braun

On May 18th, 2024, something truly special is happening in Dyersville, Iowa. The Prior Lake Mudcats, one of our hometown amateur baseball teams, will step onto the iconic Field of Dreams, immortalized in the beloved 1989 film of the same name. This isn’t just any game; it’s a journey back in time, a chance to connect with the magic of cinema and the timeless spirit of America’s favorite pastime.

A brush with movie history

For those unfamiliar, the Field of Dreams is more than just a baseball diamond carved out of an Iowa cornfield. It’s a symbol of hope, redemption, and the enduring bond between fathers and sons. In the film, Ray Kinsella, portrayed by Kevin Costner, hears a mysterious voice whispering, “If you build it, he will come.” Inspired, Ray plows under a portion of his corn crop to build a baseball field, attracting the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson.

The film’s iconic moments are etched into the memories of fans worldwide. Whether it’s the whispered mantra, “If you build it, he will come,” or the emotional exchange between Ray and his father, where Ray asks, “Hey, Dad? You wanna have a catch?” the Field of Dreams transcends cinema to become a pilgrimage site for baseball enthusiasts and movie buffs alike.

The big game

But on May 18th, the magic isn’t confined to the silver screen. The Prior Lake Mudcats will face off against the Arlington A’s in a Class ‘C’ showdown at 6:00 pm, with pre-game festivities starting at 5:00 pm. It’s a chance for these amateur athletes to step onto the same hallowed ground where legends once roamed, where dreams were chased and memories made.

Don’t miss it

And the magic doesn’t end with the final pitch. From 8:30 to 10:00 pm, the Field will be open for family, friends, and fans to immerse themselves in the experience. Whether it’s “having a catch”, taking an at-bat, fielding a grounder, or simply wandering the outfield, the Field of Dreams offers a rare opportunity to connect with the essence of the game. Though the corn may only be knee-high in May, the memories made will stand tall for years to come.
