Local teams again prominent in the 2022 MBA State Tournament Field including PL Jays return.
The ’22 Prior Lake Jays climbed from #8 Seed in the Section 3B regular season Standings to capture #4 seed from Section 3B. The Playoff Champion Chanhassen RedBird defeated Eagan while Eagan stunned regular season Champion Chaska Cubs into the #3 seed for Minnesota Baseball Associations 99th Championships for 16 Team Class “B” & “C” Tournaments. The Tournaments are hosted this season by Fairbault, Dundas and Miesville.
- The PL Jays, 2022 Arlington GrainBelt Premium Tournament Champions (Also 2019 & 2021 Champs) were also 14-1 better than the Excelsior Islanders in the Section 3B Play In Game (3B PIG) before dropping to Chaska in bracket play 6-2 and advancing with late come from behind road win swarms at Victoria 8-3 and *Burnsville (*hosted in PL) 5-4. Eagan dropped the Jays 13-1 to advance in elimination bracket play earning them #4 Seed from Section 3B. The Jays last advanced to the State Tournament in 2020 in Shakopee losing to the Moorhead Brewers in their 1st game.
The “New Jays” best finish was Runner Up to the Shakopee Indians in 2009 and had a “Final 12” finish in 2011 with Super Section format and 8 teams in the State Tournament Bracket. The current org started in 1987 but adopted the name of the 1975 and 1976 State Champions that folded after consecutive titles. The 2022 squad have posted thus far a 13-15-1 record (3-2 Playoffs, 3-0 in playoff elimination games). 18 of 23 playoff rostered hometown Jays are PLHS alumni or residents. 8 members remain from the 2020 State B participant. “Vet of Vets” Adam Cress completed his 23rd season of tenure in 2022, GM/Manager Tex Chapman was a member of the 1st “new” Jays team in 1987 and started in its 1st game at 2nd base at Dundas versus the 2022 host Dundas Dukes before playing with the PL Mudcats 1991-2007. He was the GM/Skipper of the 2009 MBA B Runner Up Jays and returned to the box this season. Assistant Manager Scott Geisler is a longtime PL Jays and PL Mudcats player dating to 1997 and current tenured Assistant Coach for the PLHS Lakers. Coaches Pat Galvin, Taylor Smith and Justin Braun are all also PLHS Laker alumni of the hardball program.
The 4 Section 3B (All RVL East in 2020) teams join a bracket in single elimination MBA Class “B” Final 16 with the hometown PL Jays opening Tournament play at/VS host Miesville Friday August 19 at Jack Ruhr Field with a 1st pitch slated for 730PM. The Mudhens were #1 seed in Section 1B by virtue of a best of 3 playoff series after posting the top record in the Classic Cannon Valley League.
Class B also has local rep in the 16 team Class B Field from Section 1B and the Dakota Rice Scott League, the New Market Muskies (a Final 4 in 2021 Class B). In Class C, The River Valley League sends the Jordan Brewers as #1 seed and the Gaylord Islanders with Belle Plaine just missing as 4th in Section play while the DRS C League sends #1 seed St Patrick Irish, Montgomery Mallards, Union Hill Bulldogs and Webster Sox (Making 1st appearance in team History in 2022). Class “C” has a draft of pitchers representing teams not in the tournament. In 2022 brother Alex Wattermann and Ryan Wattermann were drafted to join the Montgomery Mallards while Ben Morrison was drafted to join the Union Hill Bulldogs all from the Prior Lake Mudcats who were eliminated 2-1 in a DRS playoff Series vs Veseli Warriors of the DRS. The tournaments play weekends until Champions are crowned in Class “B” and “C” on Labor Day.

MISC: Waconia “hosted” their 9-8 Win VS Fergus Falls & Delano 5-0 Win VS Wilmar due to inability of MBA to keep on schedule with weather/rain affecting all 2022 host diamonds moving the 2 games to 2021 host site. Loretto & BirdIsland went a 99th State Tournament record 22 innings to break a 2-2 deadlock with BirdIsland prevailing. “3rd site” Miesville can run to the Championship in its home dugout/park with 1 more win in Class B. Players from PL are active with St Patrick and Jordan in Class “C”.
