The Prior Lake American Legion Post 447 Wizards will again serve as a host site for pool play for the Jim Hanus Gopher Classic Baseball Tournament. The Wizards have hosted for several seasons for the largest American Legion Baseball Tournament in the country and were a pool Champion 2 seasons ago as hosts.
Play kicks off at 900AM on Friday July 7 between Wausau (WI) and Helena (MT) and pool play concludes with the 15th game Sunday July 9th at 700PM between Prior Lake and Helena.
Started in 1977 and celebrating its 40th year, the Gopher Classic features and hosts some of the best American Legion baseball teams in the region and country at 16 pool sites. For 2017, there are 96 teams from 9 states and 2 Canadian Provinces. The pool Champions will advance to Semi Final and Championship bracket play at Veterans Field in Minnetonka with Champions crowned on Tuesday July 11.
Prior Lake welcomes Andover, Wayzata (MN), Wausau (WI), Mitchell (SD), Helena (MT) to Veterans Field of Memorial Park and hope the teams and fans enjoy the opportunity to play and spend the weekend in the Southwest Metro. The Vet Cafe will be expanding its traditional offerings that include the “Tastiest Wiener In Scott County” along with fresh hot popcorn, cold drinks and other ballpark fare to include Coach Nesbitts famous Root Beer Floats and pulled pork sandwiches. There is no carry on food or drink permitted but a pavilion located across the parking lot. Fans are encouraged to come on out to the Vet and support American Legion Baseball!
