TOWNBALL UPDATES: PL Jays and PL Mudcats Down The Stretch of 2018 Regular Season

The MBA Class C Prior Lake Mudcats of the Dakota Rice Scott League and MBA Class B Prior Lake Jays are running down to the wire of the 2018 regular season battling for playoff positioning.

The PL Mudcats defeated the Shakopee Coyotes in a makeup from last Thursdays rain on Tuesday 7/17 by the score of 4-1 with starting pitcher Topher Rose running 8 innings on the mound allowing 1 run on 4 hits and Jonny Houston bagging the save pitching the 9th inning fanning 2 Coyotes. Houston also chipped in at the plate with a 3-4 night and an RBI.

The Mudcats,with 9 1 run losses in 2018, can shift the standings with a late surge to improve playoff position. In the 8th slot and 3 games remaining on a 8-12 regular season the fish are in 8th place trying to finish there or higher to secure home seed for a best of 3 series while the top 4 in the DRS standings advance to regional playoff and await series winners for bracket play.

DRS League Playoffs in a best of 3 format will begin following this last week of the DRS Schedule, check links below and check back for details. The 2018 State Tournament is being hosted by Shakopee, New Prague with Jordan as 3rd site rounding out the all Scott County hosting with Champions crowned Labor Day in Class B & C.

The PL Jays most recently played a barnburner in a 6-5 11 inning loss at Chaska Athletic Park Sunday 7/15 against the Cubs. Jimmy Larson hurled 8 2/3 the day after an RVL VS DRS All Star game stint that featured 4 strikeouts in 2 innings work. In Chaska he struck out 9, allowed 5 runs on 6 hits. Mike Edlefsen was hung with the loss in a strong 2 inning outing allowing 2 hits, striking out 1 with the final play a catch in left off the bat of Chaskas Tyler Peterson for the 2nd out and a ball fired home from leftfielder Rob Frederick just wide of home that catcher Ben Kelsey grabbed but the ball popped free upon tagging the runner thrilling the Cubs faithful with the sacrifice fly win. The Jays defense played an error free game with some plays across the diamond and 2nd baseman Jeff Butler had a highlight on a 2-5 day batting with a solo blast over the leftfield fence of offense along with Rob Fredericks 4-6 3RBI day at the plate to lead the Jays 11 hit attack vs. Chaska pitchers Kilber and Ohnsorg.

The PL Jays are sitting in 5th place in the 7 team Section 3B with 6th place Victoria visiting Veterans Field of Memorial Park Friday 7/20. The Vics won the previous meeting of 2018 at Poppitz Field in June by the score of 5-1. The Jays then host the Shakopee Indians, who won their June 10 Section 3B meeting on a late 3-1 home run at Schleper Stadium Tahpark Park in Shakopee. Follow these 2 home games the Jays hit the road Monday 7/23 at Eagan then conclude at Chanhassen RedBird Storm Stadium (Chanhassen HS grounds) Friday 7/27 730PM for their Fan Appreciation Night.

In 2017, the Jays defeated Victoria 2 games to 0 in the 6th place VS 7th place series to advance to face 2017 3B Champion Chanhassen as #1 seed dropping 2 games to 1 in a best of 3 and giving Chanhassen their last loss until Labor Day Championship that Miesville won 2 games from the losers bracket. The Jays then were dropped by Burnsville to conclude 2017 playoffs.

The 2018 Playoffs are similar format with bottom 2 regular season teams will play a best of 3 to advance to a best of 3 series against the regular season #1 team while seed 2 plays 5 and 3 plays 4 in the RVL East-Section 3B Standings. The 3 series winners advance to seeding Saturday with more detail to follow as the playoff picture clears in the final stretch of regular season action. 4 of 7 RVL East-Section 3B teams will advance to the 16 team MBA Class B State Tournament field of teams. The 2018 State Tournament is being hosted by Shakopee, New Prague with Jordan as 3rd site rounding out the all Scott County hosting with Champions crowned Labor Day in Class B & C.
